Kealy Cozens on New Music in New York

Last week I was fortunate enough to take part in a skills exchange as part of a International Association of Music Information Centres programme, working and learning with the fantastic people in the New Music USA office in New York.

It was fascinating for me to find out more about new music in the US and to learn about how we are very similar in some respects but still have our differences.

Here are some of the key issues I’m thinking about as I finish my exchange:

Crossing genres. Amazing things happening still with New Amsterdam Records and Bang on a Can bringing together musicians and composers in interesting ways. See more about Bang on a Can’s Summer Festival here (applications open until 15 January) and more about New Amsterdam here.

Data and League of American Orchestras. It was fascinating to hear about how the league gather data from their member organisations and have a specialised research team to understand what’s going on with their members. I also go to see a sneaky peek of their upcoming issue of their sector magazine Symphony and can’t wait to read about the young composer schemes that orchestras across the US have started.

Health insurance. A major problem over here for composers and complex. I met with Joan from the Future of Music Coalition who do great and most importantly practical research into the lives of musicians and composers – read more here.

Equality and diversity. A big priority for Sound and Music and something that I discussed with most of the organisations I met to understand how they are tackling this problem.
